1990 MERCEDES-BENZ 500SL - $34999

 

The ‘SL’ or ‘Sport Leicht’ range of vehicles have been Mercedes-Benz’s flagship sports car
since it’s inception with the esteemed 300 SL. The success of the ‘SL’ continued through the
70s and 80s until the introduction of the R129, or fourth generation of the SL range. The R129
was offered in both 300SL and 500SL trim with six cylinder and 8 cylinder motors
respectively. The showstopper was the 500SL with the 5-litre V8.

This example is a 1990 Mercedes-Benz 500SL convertible finished in a sedate shade of light
grey, including lower body panels. It is believed and yet to be confirmed that this example
was sold new in Japan (referenced from the ‘Mercedes-Benz Japan Co., LTD’ plate on the
drivers door jamb). The vehicle was ‘Personally Imported’ to Australia in the mid-2000s with
an approval plate evident in the engine bay. This SL has since had a South Australia ‘VOS
Seating/Modification Label’ affixed for a reduction in seating capacity to two people, dated
July of 2020.

This SL features a series of AMG replica parts that reflect the options available on a pre-
merger 500SL AMG. The replica parts fitted to this example are inspired from the AMG
specification which included a full aero kit with front & rear bumper, side skirts and three-
piece rear ducktail spoiler. Additionally, a set of 18 inch replica AMG wheels feature at each
corner. Although being a convertible example, the matching R129 hardtop is currently fitted.
As for the interior, the black understated trim presents well and contrasts nicely with the light
grey exterior. Subtle wood grain highlights appear on the centre console and seat adjustment
controls within the door trims. The interior presents as per original specification with the
addition of an aftermarket pioneer stereo.

The smooth driving experience is provided by a 5.0 litre, 32 valve DOHC V8 mated to an
automatic transmission. Although not as powerful by todays AMG standards, the 5.0 power
unit is suitable for the style of driving and experience that Mercedes had aimed for in the early
90s
